How to Become an Air Traffic Controller in Europe (2026 Guide)

·10 min read

A country-by-country guide to becoming an ATC in Europe, covering FEAST test requirements, major ANSPs, training pathways and salaries across Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland and more.

Becoming an air traffic controller in Europe is one of the most rewarding careers in aviation. Most European countries recruit trainee controllers through the Eurocontrol FEAST battery.

The Common Starting Point: FEAST

Across most of Europe, the route to becoming an ATC starts with FEAST (First European Air Traffic Controller Selection Test). Used by 50+ ANSPs in 40 countries, it measures the cognitive aptitudes proven to predict success in ATC training. Because FEAST is standardised, ATC Practice preparation applies regardless of which European country you are applying in.

Germany — DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung

DFS manages one of Europe's largest airspaces including Frankfurt, Munich and Düsseldorf. Qualified DFS controllers earn between EUR 80,000 and EUR 130,000 including shift supplements. DFS runs its own training academy with an initial programme of approximately two years.

Netherlands — LVNL

LVNL provides ATC at Amsterdam Schiphol, the fourth busiest airport in Europe. Qualified controllers earn EUR 70,000-110,000 including allowances.

Austria — Austro Control

Austro Control manages Austrian airspace including complex Alpine transit flows. Controllers earn approximately EUR 60,000-100,000.

Switzerland — Skyguide

Skyguide covers Zurich, Geneva and alpine transit routes. Salaries of CHF 120,000-160,000 are common for experienced en-route controllers, making it among the best-paid in Europe.

Belgium — skeyes

skeyes manages one of the most congested airspaces in Europe relative to its size. Qualified controllers earn approximately EUR 65,000-100,000.

Common Requirements Across Europe

The selection pattern is the same everywhere: online application, FEAST aptitude battery, ICAO Class 3 ATCO medical, background check, then a paid training programme lasting 18 months to 2 years. FEAST is by far the biggest filter.
